Bathroom Makeover Magic – Painting Bathroom Cabinets to Look Like New

When your bathroom looks dull and drab, it may be tempting to start knocking down walls or tearing up tile to do a major renovation. But if that’s not in the cards, you can still achieve a stunning makeover with smaller changes like painting the cabinets or refinishing the bathtub. These simple tricks transform bathrooms from drab to fabulous, without breaking the bank on new cabinetry or countertops.

Whether you’re going for a modern or rustic look, these tips will help you choose the right paints and preparations for a lasting, professional finish. And, since the cabinets are often the focal point of a bathroom, the right color and finish can be a game changer.

Before you get started, it’s important to evaluate your bathroom and identify the areas that need improvement. Think about the daily routine of your family members and how they use the space. Then, determine your goals for the project — are you looking to create more storage, update the aesthetic, or improve functionality? These factors will influence your decisions about what changes to make, such as installing a new vanity or refinishing cabinet.

Once you have your goals in mind, it’s time to start thinking about the design. If your goal is to make the room feel larger, try a neutral color palette with lots of natural light. You can also use mirrors to double the visual space and create the illusion of depth. Alternatively, you might opt for a bold color palette that can create a statement, but be careful not to overwhelm the room with too much pattern or texture.

You’ll also need to consider the paint sheen, as durability is influenced by sheen. Flat sheens are the least durable, while gloss finishes are the most resilient. If your bathroom is a high-traffic area, you might want to opt for a semi-gloss or gloss paint.

While you’re working on the cabinets, make sure to protect your workspace with a drop cloth or newspaper. Wear rubber gloves and open windows to avoid breathing in any odors. When you’re ready to start painting, work in sections, and apply at least two coats to get full coverage.

Then, let the paint dry completely before you begin reinstalling your doors and drawers. If you’ve used a polyurethane sealer, allow the surface to cure completely before placing items on it. If not, you can spray a non-waxy finish on the cabinets to add extra protection and shine.

It’s important to take your time and follow the directions for the products you’re using. A good job takes patience, but with the right tools and technique, you can achieve beautiful results that will last for years to come. And, as an added bonus, you’ll save a lot of money by painting instead of replacing your cabinets.
